Legacy Is Also Present Tense

The more I experience, the more I understand that legacy is not only what you leave behind when you are gone. Legacy is also what you leave behind when you are no longer in a particular space.

We move through organizations, relationships, communities, projects, and different seasons of life. Eventually, we leave those spaces. The question is not simply whether we were there, but what remains because we were there.

If something only works because you are still holding it together, it depends on your presence. Legacy is different. It is the capacity, structure, knowledge, opportunity, standard, or way of thinking that remains when you are no longer in the room.

Perhaps that is another way to measure legacy:

When I am no longer in this space,

what will remain because I was once in it?
